So i received my Retron 5 today and this thing is WOW lol. Turning this thing on all i notice is how crisp and clear everything looks at 1080. Very easy menu to look over and play around with to your liking. Popping in my first game the system registers it right away for ready to play.
I started out playing Darkwing Duck and its just amazing how gorgeous it looks on a HD Tv. I also own a wii u and i have to admit the virtual console games look nowhere as pretty as these games do on this system. Also to my opinion i think how this system works is that it boots up the rom of the game i am playing, if this is true i honestly dont feel like i am playing a rom. I actually feel like im playing the game straight from the cart i inserted into the system. I am curious though and i want to do more research to see if it will play reproduction carts.
The controller.... probably the only down fall of this system is the controller it comes with. It gets the job done but i dont like it. It is a solid nice built controller but its not made for retro games. I can see myself honestly using this thing for fighting games. Actually i have used this thing for fighting games! I kid you not this thing is built just like the pdp fightpad for xbox360, i use to have one when i played mvc3. With a joystick and click sensitive 6 button layout this controller is perfect for any fighting game lol. After using this controller to play nes games its a no brainer to get me a retro controller. Our local gameshop has a dogbone model nes controller for sale so im gonna pick it up soon. Whats really cool though is that you can use any controller for any game. If fist and i were to play turtles 2 the arcade together he can bust out a genesis controller and use it if he wants to.
In the end if your looking for a way to play your favorite retro games without having to unhook systems, buy replacement systems, or find a system you need this is a system i highly recommend. If you consider getting one its best to do some research on finding the best price. I purchased mine for $129.99, i could have gotten it for $124 but those were from stores in California and those had bad rep on ebay. Its the cheapest price online ive seen so far but i just couldnt trust them. Mine came from a store in north carolina with 100% feedback and took about 4 days to get here (3 if you dont count sunday cause they didnt ship it til monday). Our gameshop the next city over has them but theyre asking $170 on them, also gamestop is suppose to have them but i think theyre priced at $139.99. Anyway if you take your time you can find one for the right price and what i spent on mine is worth every penny.
UPDATE: I forgot to mention the one thing i dreaded the most about this system and thats the games getting stuck lol. Yes at first when i put in a game and went to take it out it was in there pretty tight. After switching out between 4 different games it was no problem getting the games out. The connectors are very nicely built inside and the doors are on very strong sturdy springs so you never have to worry about the doors breaking and hanging down into the system.
