Which series do you prefer and why? Both set the bars high for other side scrolling fighters in the day but which one is the king of the brawlers in your opinion?
Oh and of course you can nominate other series too. Maybe we will learn about some other hidden treasures we should be playing.

Being a Sega guy one would assume my answer would automatically be SoR but I actually gave this some thought when I saw SoR vs DD the other day. SoR 2 is a classic, and one of my top 5 favourite games. I had it growing up, I still remember pointing to the game behind the cash and saying "that one" at the tender age of 9, but, SoR 1/3.. might be leeching from the brilliance that is SoR 2. SoR 1 is a "good" beat em up, but it's nothing legendary like 2 was, or not nearly as good as some others (Turtles in Time for example).
I own SoR 1-2-3 and FF 1-2-3 on their respective consoles and when I was younger you could have asked me which was a better series and I would have said Streets of Rage, easily, because of my love for 2, but if I had to take the 6 games and rank them in order for me it would be:
SoR 2 Final Fight 3 Final Fight 2 Final Fight 1/CD SoR 1 SoR 3
I think Streets of Rage 2 is the best of any of the aforementioned games, but as a far as the trilogy goes, Final Fight is a better series. Sorry to my fellow Sega brothers (and sisters).

I don't think much offense can be taken considering Sega at least has the definitive version of Final Fight 1, lol
I can't speak of the entire Final Fight series since I've only played the first one but I have to go with Streets of Rage for preference. Possibly going on pure nostalgia but since they are both great series the nostalgia tips the scale in favor of SoR for me.

Final Fight is cool an' all but Streets of Rage 2 is the best side scrolling beat-em-up of all time.
The crazy thing is the SOR games are toned down/censored versions of the Japanese Bare Knuckle games, which are even better!

Streets of rage for me. I love playing me some final fight but streets of rage has more to it in my opinion, especially the music in those games. Sor2 will always be my favorite, i love the part where you go out on sega field (ballpark) to beat up punks.
To give alittle love to final fight i have to say theirs nothing more badass then seeing this giant ass mayor take the streets himself. Hagar is also awesome in saturday night slam masters!

I'm voting Streets of Rage....for now. This is mainly because it's what I play the most. I have to admit that when I play Final Fight it's usually the first game. I've played them all but it's probably been a few years for 2 and a good 10 since 3. I'll take them for a spin and see if my vote changes.
When it comes to Streets of Rage, they just nail the atmosphere with the enemies and backdrops and of course the music brings it home. Final Fight has that same aesthetic to it though, it's delightfully grungy, violent and defines street fighting perfectly.
I'll be back...

Since were talking about beat em ups has anyone played Water Margin on the Genesis yet? I got it when it came out but didnt really have the opportunity to talk about it until now. Basically a company called Piko interactive brought up the rights to an old Taiwan only game called 'Shui Hu Feng Yun Zhuan', translated it into English and released it on their own carts. Its kind of like Golden Axe but set in feudal China and without the fantastical mounts. Overall its a game Ive spent quite a few hours playing, there's 10 levels (or 4 if you play on easy) with a fair length to each of them and the difficulty is I'd say easy to average for Mega Drive beat-em-up. The enemies have quite a few varied attacks, apart from your standard grunts theres bowmen, teleporting axemen and bomb throwing tough-as-nails centurions. Id say there is around 10+ different types of enemy (not including bosses) but they throw in a lot of pallet swaps in attempt to make the long levels seem more varied. The background settings vary quite a bit but id say only 50% of them are visually interesting (dont expect SOR quality backgrounds). Your attacks and magic are pretty nice animations (the flame spell in particular looks great) although the enemy moving animations leave a bit to be desired. One negative that it shares with the aforementioned Golden Axe is being trapped in animations sequences. If you get 2 or 3 guys hitting you at nearly the same time you will get stuck for a few seconds in the wincing animation and take quite a few hits before falling over. Can lead to some frustrating deaths. On the plus side you can have plenty of lives and continues in the options menu. Ive never actually finished it even with the extra lives but got to half way through the last level twice before running out of the many continues, but to be fair im pretty average at this genre anyway. As for the release itself I paid the extra and got a case and manual with it. The case is ok quality, feels a little cheaper than the official ones but Ive seen much worse (see below). The cart has a nice label, again a reproduction cartridge shell but good enough. Lastly the manual is pretty nice, its not too long but its full colour on decent paper and largely contains what youd expect without all the legal guff. On a side note something interesting I found out talking to someone on twitter about these Piko guys is that they also own the rights to Jim power. Thats not weird in itself but according to the Jim Power page on Steam they are working on finishing the Genesis version of Jim Power: the Arcade Game (which we played as a forum) and I'm sure they will slap it on a cartridge at some point. Also they just announced they are releasing the Genesis version of Duke Nukem on a cartridge (it was only released in Brazil) but unless youre a serious collector and havent played that version I wouldnt rush out to buy it in a hurry.

I had to give my vote to Streets of Rage, mainly because it is the one I know the best of the series. Over the weeekend I played Final Fight 1,2 and 3 and for some reason other than the first one they dont feel like they have that dark gritty back alley feel. Not that this is a bad thing its just that when I think of hand to hand street violence the atmosphere can make a big difference.

I really enjoyed the hand to hand combat in 3. When using Guy it felt reminiscent of Street Fighter. Glad you got a chance to check them out!

One point I HAVE to give Final Fight is that they all have Haggar in them. I love smashing me some people with Haggar!

Final Fight is great beat em' up and I certainly consider myself a fan, lol. What do you guys think about SoR3 ridiculous price increase? Fistofthewind has already mentioned it usually the one people hate on the most. Why did everyone all of a sudden have a change of heart?

I think the price increase is more because it was a late release and didn't sell as well as 1/2. It's just a tough act to follow is all. SoR 2 was a masterpiece.

Any of you guys like the Rushing Beat Ran series? They were renamed to Rival Turf and Brawl Bros outside of Japan.
