What is your favorite genre of video game? Has it changed with each console generation or do you tend to stick to your roots?

Platformers has been a general favorite for me through the years but I do enjoy all kinds of different genres. With different generations i did switch around a bit. I can remember around when the playstation one was out my favorite games to play were survival horror games. The first time i played resident evil 2 i was hooked and i hardcore played RE games, silent hill, and fatal frame up to RE4 then i grew out of the series.

My typical go-to genre is RPG, but it seems like every time I pick one up lately, I end up gravely disappointed, with Bravely Default being the outstanding exception (I honestly can't say enough good things about this game, seriously - it is amazing). It's probably because I don't have oodles of time on my hands like I did in high school and in college, but still ...
I do a lot of puzzle games now and pretty much anything that doesn't take hours of my life away at a time, if possible, like Sonic and Mario Bros. stuff. And whatever you consider Tomodachi Life.
Edit: Tomodachi Life is considered a simulation game, so I definitely do a LOT of those types of games. So, I'd say at this point that simulation and puzzle games have pushed RPG's to about 3rd place in my genre ranking.

I just realized I didn't even mention what my favorite genres were. Platformers have been a favorite pretty much across all generations but they seem to be better in the 8 and 16 bit generations. At least in my opinion anyway. I love RPGs but I have to agree with Digger where the modern ones just cant seem to hold my attention for long.
Least favorite genre is probably fighting games and real time strategy stuff.

I agree, Christie. I guess maybe I'm just an old-school RPGer at heart, I like the RPG's on SNES and PS1 best.

How do you all feel about Fallout (current vision, like Fallout3 or NewVegas)? Do you view it as RPG above anything else, or is it difficult to see past it as a FPS?
I'm bonkers for Fallout and I consider it one of the best things going in RPG these days.

I actually think fallout, Destiny, Skyrim and the like are really cool.

With all the elements of customizing yourself and you being the role of the character making decisions on your path to where you want to go. I view first persons to be like call of duty, bioshock, or doom where your in a set story from point a to point b.

lol nah... I can't actually picture myself wearing the thing while I play. I'll use the pip-boy app on my iPad mini when I play.

No "SHMUP" fans? Some of my most expensive and best games (Keio Flying Squadron, MUSHA, Gun-Nac) are SHMUPS. I'd have to say fighters (more specifically Capcom fighters) are my favourite genre. My mother used to take me to the grocery store and just leave me at the SF2 machine while she went grocery shopping and I'd just watch the older kids play. When I finally got to play it it was a moment I'll never forget. I picked Guile and I mashed the hell out of the buttons. Good times

I love shoot-em-ups and like a bitter jaded old man, I refuse to call them Shmups. Probably out of some misplaced anger towards internet lingo and nonsense word creation in name of laziness. like I said, bitter jaded old man.

A lot of people I've spoken with have echoed that sentiment.
