Ive always taken really good care of my game discs so I've never had to do this in the past but I bought a Saturn game lot off eBay the other day for cheap but the seller warned me some of the games had some moderate to light scratches. When the lot arrived I immediately tried all the discs. All of them worked so I was stoked but I got the idea to take some of the more damaged ones to my local game shop to be resurfaced, couldn't hurt right? My local game shop has a pretty high end resurfacer so I felt pretty safe letting them do this. All of the discs look great when I got them back and I was pretty pleased. Just out of curiosity I still wanted to test them again to make sure they didn't screw my games up. Sure enough 1 out of the 3 discs I had resurfaced no longer will boot on the Saturn. Did some research on the matter and it turns out (looking back this should have been common sense) no matter how nice the resurfacer is, if the person operating it doesn't know what their doing they can absolutely ruin your game/disc. I want to say I was very happy how the discs turned out, they looked almost mint but the reason I wanted to share this with you guys is to basically tell you to only do resurfacing when the game doesn't work. Then you really don't have anything to loose and it could revive your disc. Lesson learned. While doing some research on this I seen that some collectors say you can tell when a game has been resurfaced and it devalues the game. I'm not sure how I feel about this, you want your game to look as close to new as possible right? If it works, why is it devalued? Here is a picture of the resurfaced disc that no longer works, can you guys see anything that would make you think it's been resurfaced?

I can't tell a difference in it myself. I feel like the practice of resurfacing is just inherently risky myself and I try to avoid it at all cost if I can. My first and last experience with it was on my copy of Darkstalkers for Sega Saturn. It got a little scratched and as a result some of the in game music was skipping. After the resurface it wouldn't boot at all I wonder if Saturn games are just too sensitive for that process.

The opening movie in Nights would skip a little and even freeze the game sometimes if I let it play. After the resurfacing it plays perfectly. I read online that the Saturn reads some kind of security code on the outside of the disc when booting a game, maybe the resurfacing damaged this causing the Saturn to reject the discs now? I'm not going to do it to any more unless they don't work in the first place. My OCD about scratches is gonna have to chill, lol.

Hey When it comes to any of my disc games i get anal about scratches and the case condition. I guess over time we learned how fragile these games can be on discs is the reason we get so ocd about them. Cartridge games just need alittle swig of alcohol and they're good to go. I wouldnt mind taking a few of my wii games and trying it out. I bought out food cities video store lot years back and some of them are pretty bad but still work. If they came back not working i wouldnt mind because of them being cheaper titles.

Does anyone have any suggestions on resurfacing a UMD for PSP? I bought 3 of them in a lot, and they're all good except 1. The one I want to play, of course. -_- It shows the video at the PSP UMD screen, but it won't load. I've tried cleaning it, but it's an absolute pain.

And I never really thought about devaluing, I keep my stuff I buy new in good shape, but I'm a cheapskate now who buys used games and I just want them to work, lol.

No, that one works beautifully, thankfully. It's such a gorgeous game, I was floored when I first started playing it, very well done. It's the other one I was looking forward to playing, Marvel Ultimate Alliance.

That sux marvel doesnt work. On a plus note i dont think its very expensive at all so it would be easy to pick up again.

I don't understand how it can read enough to pick up/play the video though, that's weird. But the disc just spins and spins while it tries to load, and there's 5 eagle emblem thingies in the right hand corner, but it doesn't go anywhere.

I hate to turn the guy in or complain in it since he threw in that cool case and didn't have to, but it sucks that it doesn't work, lol.

I was actually discussing this yesterday with someone on Twitter. UMDs cannot be resurfaced because there is a metal plate in the center of the disc. If there was some way to remove this maybe it would be possible but I couldn't imagine how to do that.

Is that a magnet? I thought I read somewhere it was, but I sure ain't testing to see, lol. I tried spinning it around the best I could to clean, but it's nothing but a bitch to get to. I hate that it's so scratched up in places.
