I know this might be a hot-button topic, but I promise I didn't intend for it to be, ha ha. But this thread can be used for general social media/instant messaging/communication discussions, I just really do need some suggestions on this topic.
I have reached a point where, for both personal and professional reasons, I may need to deactivate a certain social media account. The problem is that it has become my *primary* source of communication. I live in an area where I don't get cell phone service, so people can't just text me at any time of day because I will most likely not get it, immediately. However, I do have wifi nearly anywhere, so it is helpful for me to just use this account for messaging people. However, my company frowns upon this particular site and certain aspects of using it (such as having direct reports connected to it), and rather than hurt people's feelings or do the wrong thing, I think it'd be best just to get rid of it. I know I can use Skype, but not many people I know use it. And I can be reached by gmail/google chat, but I don't know if that works for everyone either. Does anyone have any ideas or other alternatives for me? I'm kind of at a loss.

Is it possible to have a private account? Make an alternate one and communicate with people that way? I know a lot of people who have two Twitter accounts and only allow a certain circle of people to follow one, lock it etc. so it's private.

Hmmm ... I hadn't considered a private account, if that's possible. I've played around with the idea of an alternate account. That gives me some ideas, thanks!!

Is the problem more the people that are connected to you? (trying to understand what's going on). If you need a messenger program, I think a lot of android devices come installed with Kik messenger. Skype is okay and I think most people have an account because once again it comes pre-installed on most devices. My problem with it is that I think it's known more as a video chat device, so when people find me they try to initiate video chat and I'm almost never in the mood for that. I think wattswc 's idea might ultimately be the best way to go and just keep the friends you actually want to talk to in the know about it. I one of the many reasons I like twitter over fb is that you can have some anonymity to it. You could register your own name or you can be TailsTheFox465465 if you want. Leave your fb as your "professional face" to the world and keep twitter for all other shenanigans. While it's not as good as a messenger, Twitter's direct messaging has improved as of late.

It may not help your particular situation but Facebook does have a lot of account details you can can configure to exclude certain ppl from things without their knowledge. This is an extreme measure but you could always reset your account and just start friending people over again but feelings usually get hurt that way. Just depends on how sensitive you wish to be.

Echoing FistoftheWind, I too keep my Facebook on a somewhat personal level, and my twitter is mainly internet people I've made friends with and complain about sports and talk video games on. The removal of 140 chars on the DM system has made twitter a viable private messaging medium now.

Thank you for the awesome advice, everyone! I'm on Twitter too, so that's a good idea! I didn't know they removed the character limit, thanks for the heads up! I have also been informed by another friend of mine that Google Hangouts would be a viable option, as well. All of the above would work for me! Yay! I think this should be manageable, I just have to clarify with the people who message me the most to make sure it works for them. I could grouphug you all, thanks!!

I tried the circus that is facebook twice with bad luck each time. From creeper exes to family members snooping into my affairs and filling in the blanks on information they couldn't find it always ended up bad for me. Almost cost me my job one time.
I did twitter for a while once but the nasty direct messages I got as a result of being female and a gamer made that go bad quick. I'm tempted to give it a shot again especially since so many of you are on there too. On paper social media sounds like this great thing but it always tends to go sour for me. Or maybe I'm just too sensitive who knows.

Eek that sucks... I dropped Facebook myself but I find Twitter alright. If you go back to Twitter I'll follow but not harass you.

I got rid of Facebook. That was my problem area. I am on Twitter and Tumblr, though. tnam0s for Twitter, and PhaserPulse for Tumblr, although I hardly use it.

I've come pretty close to deleting my facebook myself a few times but I just have too many pictures of my kids on there. I'm sure I have them downloaded somewhere, but it would take a long time to make sure I had them all downloaded. I'm also on twitter as fistofthewind. I believe I'm following everyone here, if not then let me know right away
