Remember back in the day when 3rd party controllers were notorious for being pieces of crap? Occasionally you'd run into some that were actually designed pretty well or had some extra features that might make you prefer them over the 1st party offerings. If you happened to be one of the lucky ones that did discover a 3rd party gem, let's talk about it here. I had both the 3 and 6 button versions of this. Actually I remember Ascii brand controllers were pretty good for the most part and usually had turbo and automatic features for each button. I found their d-pads were pretty great for fighting games: On SNES I got this one. I can't remember the brand but I'm sure it wasn't just SN. The D-pad was pretty much the same as the 1st party SNES one but what I liked about it was that the buttons were really snappy which made it great for fighting games. Maybe it's just me but I feel like the 1st party SNES buttons are kind of squishy...almost like those pressure sensitive Xbox 360 pads only I'm pretty sure there wasn't any kind of tech like this back on the SNES. The turbo and auto functionality worked just as well as anything else I've used it on too. I'm not sure how I came to own this particular Playstation pad and I seem to remember it being an Ascii too but whatever. It was pretty sweet for fighting games too because of the D-pad. Though I've gotten used to the 1st party Sony d-pad over the years, at first I didn't like it. You guys have any you'd like to share?

I'm a big fan of the turbo touch for the Genesis because its like someone took a perfectly good controller and said "How can we make this terrible?" My 2nd mention which again is Im not sure is my favourite since I've never tried it but the concept is hilarious.... is the BatterUP controller. It may look like something inappropriate to give to a child (get your mind out of the gutter) but its meant to be a bat you can swing during World Series Baseball or some other genesis sports game.

Guess this has become the ASCII love thread because my 6-button Genesis Arcade Stick by them is one of my favorites. Found mine at the bottom of a storage tub in a game shop, bought it for $5.00! Those Koreans really know how to make some awesome controllers.

Get a load of the Jet Fighter controller for SNES/GEN. Can you imagine trying to use this?

I would imagine this was less of a design decision and more of a situation where "I have a warehouse full of controller parts and my brother has that molding machine for toy air planes."

Picked this 3rd party Xbox controller up the other day. Really impressed with the quality, everything feels great and does what it should except the d-pad. Well, it works just fine for anything other than fighting games. Name of the company is TTX Tech. Another interesting fact about this controller: apparently (according to the manager at the game store) this company takes broken Xbox controllers and makes these from the parts! Seems illegal, probably why they are made in China.

Is that massive green blob in the middle just a massive green blob in the middle? No logos or anything?
When it comes to the Xbox anything was better than that one massive first party controller they released. A literal football with buttons glued to either side would be more comfortable than that thing.

It's kinda 50/50, I don't care for it myself but anyone who has big hands absolutely loves the thing. Makes sense, most controllers are not made for people with larger hands. I've actually used one not long ago, overall it's not that bad. My only complaint is about the buttons. They are oblong or egg shaped so any game you play with any degree of button mashing can give you some serious blisters, lol. Apparently people with larger hands don't have this problem with it so good for them.

I dont know that I have small hands... I guess so in the case of who ever designed that thing at Microsoft.

For what it's worth, I was wondering about the green blob as well, lol. I'm guessing they had to put something there, but couldn't put an X without being even more obvious. I'm a little surprised they didn't try for a different color though. Maybe orange. I dunno.

For when you lose an online match in Capcom vs. SNK 2 due to lag, you can jam your fingernails into the blog while you scream. These guys thought of everything!

Or maybe it was actually a cheaper filler than hard plastic, lol.

That "blob" lol, is kinda strange. You can tell by feeling it that it's made from the exact same plastic as the official controllers. It's hard to explain but they had a very distinct feel to them. I suppose because of legal purposes they removed the "X" and just slapped that green underneath the plastic.
