Anybody planning on going in on this when they launch the indiegogo campaign in the next day or two? I'm still on the fence about it. I think they are after around $300 US for each one which is a lot for something we dont know a huge amount about. If you dont know what it is its a new cartridge based system that uses 2d visuals. I'm on the fence about it too. I really need to see more of the software they're going to have on the thing before I can commit to it. 300 bucks is a lot to ask for a mystery box, I mean, you could get a PS4, Xbox One, or a slew of retro gaming stuff for that amount of cash.
My hopes for the project was for it to be a platform where ex developers could get together and perhaps work on sequels to older games. Like a proper Earthworm Jim sequel, Rocket knight, Alisia Dragoon, or hell even a classic 2D Sonic or something.
I have a feeling a lot of indie titles are going to find their way to the system but I don't think that'll be enough to carry it if those games are available for a more affordable price on platforms that people already own. A collector might appreciate a Shovel Knight cartridge and case for say 50 dollars, but your average consumer is going to go for the 5 to 10 dollar digital version every time.
All that being said though, I'm really hoping they'll show something soon to wow us!

So the campaign just started, see here: Retro VGSThink I'm gonna hold off too unless I see some wonderful games being announced for it in the next few weeks. Wish it all the success though.

Canadian dollar is in the toilet right now. 300 USD is almost 450 for me. Going to hold off and see how this plays out. I feel like this could be another Ouya.

At least the Cad to Yen aint so bad. Im not sure if this system is Android based like the Ouya, I 'm 99% sure it isnt but if it was then I would never buy it. Perhaps the biggest road block they will face is they arent even showing us any game play footage yet so how can people get excited?

It's not about what this thing COULD do, it's about the games it ends up with. Look back at the nes, the thing wasn't really state of the art even in its time but man does it have some magical games that stand the test of time even today and that's what ultimately landed one in every household. Let's see some games!

Games sell the hardware that's for sure. I think most developers (WayForward for example) are taking a wait and see approach not unlike most gamers who have an interest in the console. Ultimately this could be the RetroVGS' undoing and that does kinda suck. I've actually spoke with Steve Wiota (Kid Chameleon, Sonic Spinball) a little about it on Facebook and his heart is in the right place I just honestly don't see this thing coming together. Especially after they announced the price, this just pissed everyone off and they got a TON of negative feedback over it. Here is a link to RetroVGS Wiki page, it's goes into a little detail on the console itself but more importantly it has a list of confirmed launch titles. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retro_VGS

So after day day one (obviously the most important day) they have raised 3% of what they need. Not a terrible figure and assuming it stays at the same pace it will be funded but that doesnt account for the momentum they will lose up until the last few days. Who knows maybe this thing wont even get funding? I hope it does though.
I really think they should have had a killer app prepared and maybe even used it as a mascot. I mean Sega had Sonic, Nintendo had Mario, TurboGRAFX had... Bonk. I know its not the 90s any more and mascots are kind of a dead concept but I think it would have really appealed to the retrocrowd. It could even have been an ironic parady mascot (like cheetahman as you guys said in that other thread) but it would give it some brand recognition rather than just being a new PCB in old Atari Jaguar shells.
Maybe I'm just talking out my arse, its great you can get a cool clear or purple shelled one but when the system costs as much as a Wii U and all we have is a few proof of concepts then I think its gonna be hard for them.

Infact a few of those already exist on 3 or 4 different systems. I realise that a lot of the games will be ports to begin with and I'm fine with that but it makes it even weirder that the RVGS guys arent already showing them off.

If they could lower the price, get the rights and show the power of this system and make an exclusive cheetahmen beat em up game i bet it would get some funding. I know cheetahmen are kinda lame but their is a fandom for it.

The retro VGS is the platform the Cheetahmen needed from the get go. Let's go Cheetahmen revival! Haha.
I like the mascot idea though and I do agree that it would carry some weight with the retro crowd. Tiny Knight could fit the bill if they aren't already planning to port it to other consoles.
That's another ding against it now that I think about it. Anyone that is developing for the VGS first probably has plans to do digital ports to other consoles anyway just in case it flops. When people discover that as a trend then I think the masses will just start waiting on the digital releases :/

Is there really a Cheetah Men fandom?
I'm with you guys on the fence. I just have too many other purchases I'd like to make before I could spend 300 on something like this. It would take some kind of amazing game announcement to swing me.

Yup believe it or not their is lol. A few years ago a kickstarter program came out to have cheetahmen released on a stand alone cart. It actually did pretty well and every backer received a copy which go for pretty good money now if you see a copy online.
